Last year SEWFA’s initiative of playing a Top Four contest at the end of the season saw the popularity of the game soar in the South East. Nothing will change in season 2008 as we build on the back of an ever increasing wave of Women and Girls Football. SEWFA have expanded it’s competition to eight senior teams welcoming sides from Portland and Millicent into the league. These two clubs already have a solid foundation within the WBSA and the Women’s Teams will only build on that.
SEWFA are also looking to increase their numbers by developing an U14 Competition. We have had a number of ‘Come and Try’ sessions during the summer and the results have been positive. With numbers increasing each session, a four team U14 League is on the cards to cater for girls as they progress to senior ranks.
The SEWFA Development Squad ran for a second year during the summer with Scott Dickson at the helm. Two of the squad members, Tess Andrews and Rhiana Peate, have benefited from the squad as both were selected by, and are now training with, the Adelaide Young Sensation. This is another stepping stone for these girls in their quest to gain National Selection with the Matildas. Along with the success of the WBSA U13 and U16 teams, SEWFA showed (again) they are leading the way as the only Women’s Regional Football Association in the State.
The summer also saw the Seven-a-Side competition thrive at Blue Lake Sports Park with seasons played before and after Christmas. With eight teams playing the smaller version of the game, SEWFA has seen a number of new faces come along and enjoy our code. Whoever said Football was a winter sport hasn’t been involved with SEWFA!
Season 2008 could be one of SEWFA’s biggest years yet. More teams and more participants will only lead to more success on and off the park.
