International win fifth title

Posted on August 28, 2008, 10.10am
International made it five from five last Sunday.
The powerhouse of the Western Border Soccer Association won its fifth consecutive premiership, and eighth in nine years, and is now one of the most dominant sporting clubs in Mount Gambier.
Since the state of the 2006 season International has lost just one match and has gone through both the 2007 and 2008 seasons undefeated
Yesterday inspirational coach Tony D’Agostino spoke to The Border Watch about his team, the history they’ve created and what the future holds for this proud club.
The fifith consecutive championship is something D’Agostino is savouring, especially considering at the end of the 2006 season he felt his time as coach had come to an end.
He was brought back at the request of the players and has since seen his club enjoy a golden run of success that may never be repeated again.
He knows what it has taken, on and off the pitch, to get the club to this pinnacle.
“I’m ecstatic to be involved with a bunch of guys who are constantly pushing the boundaries to get better,” D’Agostino said.
“We’ve got young kids doing it week in, week out.”
Having such sustained success is not something that has just happened, nor is simply good luck.
The players have dedicated themselves to the club and are prepared to do what ever is asked of them to help the side achieve a victory.
“The biggest satisfaction, for me, is that the guys show a lot of respect to me,” D’Agostino said.
“If the respect wasn’t there I wouldn’t keep doing it.
“And I respect them, it’s mutual, and I think that is what keeps us all going.”
The 2008 season got underway earlier that usual for International, as the club faced Super League side Adelaide City in early April.

It was a mammoth task to remain competitive with one of Adelaide’s best club and although International lost 13-0, it showed the players how much more improvement they needed to make.
“When Adelaide City came here they saw how much it took to get to an even higher level,” D’Agostino said.
“Yeah they got beaten, but they competed and it showed them how far they need to go to get to the next level.
“Straight after the game I wasn’t sure how they’d be feeling, but the guys were so proud of what they had done.”
Round one of the season was against rivals Apollo and on this day D’Agostino saw his side show the character he has become accustomed to.
“Against Apollo it looked like we were going to have our first loss when we were 2-1 down with five minutes to go.,” D’Agostino said.
“But the guys didn’t give up and by the end of the match we got up 3-2.
“That really showed the character of these boys - they just didn’t give up.
“I’ve had such pleasure watching these guys improve and never give up this season.”
The dominance of the side this season is staggering.
International kicked 100 goals for the season and conceded just 12 and the side has the title secured as it prepared to play its final match.
“The first game of the year and the last game of the year were my most enjoyable, D’Agostino said.
“We did have some fun at our last game.
“The guys could see that I was a bit more relaxed and they enjoyed themselves out there.
“We still played some good soccer, but it was good to see the guys having fun.”
With more soccer still to be played before the end of the season, D’Agostino is looking forward to some more success.
Looking to the future, the coach believes International can remain the side to beat for many seasons to come.
“I don’t see that our squad will change that much,” D’Agostino said.
“The thing about these boys is that they want to improve, they want to take it to the next level.”

Adelaide United FC could not come away with a win to secure a place in its third straight Pre-Season Cup Final, drawing 0-0 with Perth Glory in Mount Gambier.
In a first for Hyundai A-League football in South Australia, Adelaide United FC has taken a home match to regional Mount Gambier, however the club could not come away with a win to secure a place in its third straight Pre-Season Cup Final, drawing 0-0 with Perth Glory.
A crowd of approximately 3,500 witnessed professional football for the first time at the home of Aussie Rules, Vansittart Park in Mount Gambier.
The Reds started the match the better in a first half of missed opportunities for both sides. The half time score could have easily been 3-3 but instead, both sides failed to find the back of the net.
The first chance of the match fell to United’s newly appointed Vice-Captain Lucas Pantelis in the 6th minute, his powerful drive from 25 metres sailing over the cross bar.
A couple of minutes later midfielder Fabian Barbiero sent a delightful cross from the right hand side of the box finding Reds front man Cristiano, but the Brazilian’s header from close range missed the target.
Perth’s first opportunity came in the 11th minute when Hayden Doyle’s cross found Eugene Dadi, the Glory’s new signing forcing a save from United keeper Eugene Galekovic.
The Reds then looked to open the scoring as they again put pressure again on Glory keeper Frank Juric’s goal. The Glory keeper had to stop a Scott Jamieson effort before Travis Dodd sent a cross in finding Pantelis in a dangerous area, but he uncharacteristically missed the ball to foil the chance.
The chances kept coming in the opening 45 minutes, Dadi giving the Adelaide defence something to think about as he tried his luck from 25 metres but it flew high. He was then at it again, aiming on target but Galekovic came to United’s rescue.

In the 29th minute Cassio took a free kick from the left hand side, finding Dodd outside the six yard box, but unfortunately for Adelaide, the Reds Captain missed the target when he should have broken the deadlock.
Four minutes later Cassio was at it again with another free kick from a similar spot, and this time it was defender Robert Cornthwaite’s turn to miss the target as he sent his header over the bar.
As half time was looming, the Glory had a chance to take the lead when Scott Bulloch took possession with room to size up a shot, but it went well wide to end a frustrating 45 minutes for both sides.
Nil-all at half time, the Mount Gambier faithful were looking for an opening goal, but unfortunately the second half provided little goal mouth action and few opportunities. It took 10 minutes after the interval for the first chance, which came from Glory defender Jamie Coyne, who went close to sending a header into his own net, as the ball went just wide of the post.

That was the closest both sides would come for the remainder of the contest, United forced to settle for a 0-0 result.
With the points shared, United was replaced at the top of the table by Melbourne Victory, who defeated the Newcastle Jets in the other Group A match, the Victory progressing to the Final on Wednesday.
After the game, Adelaide United Coach Aurelio Vidmar was left to rue his team’s missed opportunities, and while he said it was disappointing that United could not capitalise and reach its third straight Pre-Season Cup Final, he was satisfied with the effort.
“I thought after the first half the game should have been more or less all over with the chances we had but that’s the way it goes sometimes,” Vidmar said.
“I was fairly pleased with the first half, we just lacked a bit of quality in front of goal. The boys were heavy in the legs after half time because they had a hard week at training leading into the game, so now we will just taper off a bit and get ready for Round 1.”
United will have a final hit out on Wednesday night against the Adelaide United Youth League trial squad, before The Reds open their Hyundai A-League 2008/09 Season against Perth Glory at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday, August 17.
